The following compilation was made by experienced players. It is short in order to make it easier for unexperienced players to learn the basic rules of the game and to avoid bad mistakes. Therefore it cannot be allover correct. There will be many situations in a game, where different ways of playing seem to be more successful.
This is the explanation of some terms used in the game
Dulle : 10 of Hearts, the most powerful trump of the game
Die Alte: Queen of Clubs
Fehl: all cards except trump = offsuits (in a regular game all cards exept Diamonds, Jacks, Queens and 10s of Hearts)
Fux/Fuchs: Ace of Diamonds (if caught from the opponent party it means a bonus point at the end of the game)
Karlchen/Charly: Jack of Clubs (if the last trick is made by Charly it means a bonus point, too)
Doppelkopf : a trick of 40 or more points

1. Try by any means to get the opportunity of playing the black aces for the first time. In the majority of games „Fehl“ helps to win the game. If trump is played, take the 10 of Hearts, the Queeen of Clubs should only be chosen if you are the last one to play a card.
2. Play the Ace of the suit you´ve got the fewest cards of first. Black suits (Clubs and Spades) prior to Hearts. Playing black Ace accompanied by another card usually is more successful than playing a single Ace of Hearts
3. „Kontra gives away while Re plays „hard to get“ , that means, if you are Kontra, even if you don´t know yet, who your partner will be, you should always play your highest card except an Ace. The reason ist, that most of the time the Re-Party owns more trump and therfore the second run of a suit usually will go there.
4. By no means win a trick that already belongs to your partner, not even by playing the „Fux“. You rather ought to get rid of useless Fehl.
5. Untimely very early anouncement of Re oder Kontra in case of not playing the first card should only be made if you hold both 10s of Hearts (Doppeldulle, DD). If you play the first card, a very good hand is sufficient for the announcement.
6. For further announcments like k90 etc. you should be 90% sure of winning the game or if it is neccessary for your partner to know tha you are playing with him (her)
7. Never play the Queen of Clubs, except you want to show the posession of both 10s of Hearts (DD)
8. Playing a Dulle always shows that you own a Queen of Clubs as well (are Re). Kontra NEVER plays the 10 of Hearts
9. Playing Ace or 10 of Diamonds announcing „Re“ means that you hold DD. Playing one of these cards without announcement means you are „Kontra“
10. The first card to be played should mostly be „Fehl“, exepting a very good hand (at least 8 ore more trump and/or free of one or more suits)
11. If trump is played, NEVER play the Queen of Clubs on position 2, even if you wish to show that you are „Re“
12. Avoid playing a valuable trump (Fux or 10 of Diamonds) before your partner, forcing him to use a high trump
13. Don´t place „foul“ Fehl in front of your partner, that means, a card of a suit, of which you know the other party sitting behind your partner doesn´t hold any more of
14. Play trump, if you´re asked to (eg your partner playes trum and/or announces k60 )
15. Do not play a high trump before your partner („second player as low as possible“)
16. Don´t overtrump your partner – never play the „Blaue“ (Queen of Spades ) beeing „Re“, as long as you don´t know who your partner is
17. Avoid overtrumping your partner if he/she is likely to win a trick (eg Ace in the 2nd run), if you can get rid of another „Fehl“
18. If the 1st run of a „Fehl“ suit went unremarkably, do not waste a high trump (Dulle, Alte, Blaue) on the 2nd run
19. If your party is able to ruff one suite, avoid playing another suite for the 2nd time, especially Hearts. This would help the opponent party getting rid of their „Fehl“.
20. NEVER waste the „Dulle“ in order to make a „Doppelkopf“. Keep „Karlchen“ for the last trick only if you are sure you can make it
